My first Gaslight Anthem gig and ooooh I’m in love!! I’ve loved this band for a while now but hadn’t been able to catch them live. If you get a chance, please do yourself the favour and go!
Getting to the Troxy was a bit of a trek through East London but we were fine once we got to the venue. It’s a beautiful old theatre-style location which usually means amazing sound. The first couple of rows were two steps down while the rest of the downstairs standing was level. This was great because we didn’t have to be all the way at the front to catch most of the action.
The gig opened with ‘The Spirit of Jazz’ which is a song that makes you want to move your feet, and your bum and your whole entire body. Its rockabilly-punkiness combines beautifully two of my favourite things. If this song comes on and you don’t want to dance, we can’t be friends. One of my favourites has always been ‘Even Cowgirls Get The Blues’ because of the heart-string-pulling guitar opening. This was obviously even better live. Again, makes you want to move your hips and sway like it’s Aerosmith.
There was an encore, hooray. I love encores, mainly because it doesn’t leave you wanting more. You’ll always want more, and there will always be a song they didn’t play but encores make you feel like the band isn’t ready to go home either – even though they are obviously planned.
I loved every song and part of this gig and it was my first live gig in London, so it will always have a special place in my heart.
