Kinky Boots @ Adelphi Theatre London, 02/09/2015

Kinky Boots is brand new to the West End and I was super excited to see it. The music is by Cyndi Lauper, so how could anything be bad? And it wasn’t, quite the opposite actually! Kinky Boots is an explosion of striking colors, fabulous fun, and a compelling story all mixed with a splash of sass.

I had admittedly not seen the movie which the musical is based on, so I can’t say whether that is a good or bad thing. I went into the musical with the only knowledge that it’s about fabulous boots.

The story of Charlie and Lola, and how they come about making a line of knee-high, high-heeled boots is unique and daring. The West End is usually fairly conservative, non-offensive, family-friendly. And Kinky Boots is far from offensive but it is pushing the boundaries of the musical scene with a fantastic drag queen named Lola trying to open the minds of a small-town shoe factory.

It does not disappoint in sparkle and dreams, and love. The secret star of the musical is factory worker Lauren, played by Amy Lennox. She is hilariously relatable as she slowly falls for the boss and her adorable awkwardness has the audience in compassionate stitches.

If you’re up for a good night out you should definitely go see Kinky Boots at the Adelphi Theatre.
