With Valentine’s Day coming up it’s time to bust out all those cheesy tunes you usually hide all year long.
BUT there are actually some seriously good love songs that aren’t just catchy but have the best lyrics. I’ve collated my favorites for you guys:
1. Elvis Costello – She
Hello, Valentine’s Day! You can’t have a Valentine’s playlist without this Elvis Costello song.
2. Arkells – And Then Some
Time to bring out the heart eyes emojis. I LOVE this song and this shall be the song they play at my wedding for the first dance (whoever that may be with). It’s so adorable and sweet and exudingly loving.
3. The Gaslight Anthem – Blue Dahlia
A bit of an odd love song, but I’ve come to the decision that it IS in fact a love song, rather than a break up song. Two broken souls coming together and saying let’s do this. “Where’d you get them scars? How blue is your heart? Is it sad enough break? She said it’s sad enough to break. How long was your life? Was it cold and strange like mine? Are you man enough to lay here? She said I’m man enough, my baby, come see about me.”
4. Sixpence None The Richer – Kiss Me
Oooh the girlie girl in me loves this song. Absolutely adorable! 90’s gold.
5. The Libertines – You’re My Waterloo
A Libertines gem, if you ask me, their best song. When they played it at Reading in 2015 it gave everybody all the feels. And yeah, this is probably supposed to be on the Anti-Valentine’s list but I stand my ground on this being a love song, a screwed up, Pete and Kate kind of love song, but a love song nonetheless.
6. Aqualung – Brighter Than Sunshine
Brighter Than Sunshine is also off the A Lot Like Love album and it feels like a song you should have as background music in your life. You know, that moment when you both realize you’re in love with each other (okay, I know this doesn’t happen, but if it did, this would be your song!).
7. Bruce Springsteen – Tougher Than The Rest
“The road is dark and it’s a thin, thin line. But I want you to know I’ll walk it for you anytime.” Honest love songs. Bruce Springsteen is the master of those. None of the unrealistic, heart-eyed BS you hear in most songs. He writes solid serenades without sounding sappy. And his and Patti’s relationship is everything you’d ever want, just google any of their duets and see the sparks fly, even after 20+ years.
8. Bryan Adams – I’m Ready
On the complete other side of the spectrum, Bryan Adams. Oozing with goo-y loooove. You can pick any Bryan Adams love song and it would be a winner. I chose one that has a little less sappy-ness and goo-y-ness, and more realness.
9. Coldplay – Fix You
Love or hate Coldplay, Fix You is beautiful. Chills central.
10. Gavin Rossdale – Love Remains The Same
I may have a slight crush on Gavin Rossdale (mainly for his looks, partially because he got to marry Gwen Stefani who is absolute girl goals. Shame they got divorced.). This song is a tune though, and that’s besides the fact that in the official video, Gavin is shirtless half the time (soz).
11. Katie Melua – Nine Million Bicycles
Sweet, sweet Katie Melua. I could listen to her voice all day long, so mellow, so talented.
12. Frank Turner – The Angel Islington
No big explanation needed, this song is on point: lyrics, melody, everything.
13. Chuck Ragan – Nothing Left To Prove
There’s something about Chuck Ragan’s voice that hits right in the feels.
14. George Strait – Carrying Your Love With Me
Someone once said to me “One day someone will walk into your life and make you realize what George Strait was singing about.” Still waiting for that day, but I can’t wait.
Happy Valentine’s Day! 💋
